Elementary Balloon Battle

Almost the whole elementary showed up to the water balloon fight on Wednesday. Kids enjoyed throwing balloons at their friends and their enemies. Kids crowded the trash cans with balloons not willing to leave until they had each had at least 10. Side by side the Student Council had a bake sale for those who wanted some baked goods. The fun didn’t end even after the last balloon had popped, when the balloons were gone, the cups came in. Kids came to buckets full of water and started gathering water in their cups and splashing it on each other. The success of the elementary water balloon fight just heightened the anticipation for the MS/HS water balloon fight. In the end everyone had fun, the supervisors, the kids and also the Student Council.

Spirit Week tally up

This year we had a good turnout for the YIS Spirit Week. Hearkening to student suggestions the Student Council decided to stick to old YIS Spirit Week classic themes with one new one. The themes for the Spirit Week were as follows:

Saturday- Triplet or Twin Day

Sunday- Pajama Day

Monday- Wacky Hair Day

Tuesday- Character Day

Wednesday- Class theme Day

On Wednesday classes had to choose a theme and every participant had to be following that theme.

Now to the competition… Class reps made tallies of how much of their class had participated. From that the class percentage was figured out. The winning class had to have the highest average percentage for his or her section of the school

First let’s congratulate all the participants for their School spirit.

For High School in 3rd place with an average percentage of 23.5%, is the 9th grade. The 2nd placer by only .2%, with an average percentage of 40% , is the 12th grade. And now the winner…The winner of the Spirit Week with a unlikely close average percentage of 40.2% is the 10th GRADE… Well done 10th grade for an excellent effort

In Middle School category was one hectic one. Even though there were only two grades, the competition ended up being between 7A, 7B , 8A and 8B. And were we surprised by the outcome. In 3rd place was 8A and in 2nd place was 8B. For 1st place, surprisingly, we had a complete tie with both 7A and 7B tied for 1st place with an average percentage of 72.9%. So it looks like the two sections of Grade 7 will have to share their prize. Well done 7th grade for a surprising and amazing effort.

Finally after tallying all the percentages for the many elementary grades, it was that grade 2N was the clear winner for elementary group.

We would like congratulate all the winning classes and all those classes who didn’t win for giving an excellent effort. It just proves that even though school spirit is dwindling in this school there is enough to make us Stallions know that this school can achieve greatness.

YIS Spring Fling ’10- A Partial Succes

This is a long overdue post and I’m sorry it’s taken so long to put up. But moving on…

We are happy to announce that the YIS Social was more or less a grand success. There were a few problems such as conflicting schedules and new administration rules but other than that the spring fling was a major success. Everyone at the Social agreed the food at the Social was something worth raving about, which we should thank Shamiat for. Participants also agreed that the sound system and the music choice were way better compared to last years. There was some criticism of the guessing game played during eating and the complicated route that guests had to take but other than it all went well. The Student Council just has one concern they feel that should be voiced; when the Student Council announces that an event will start at a certain time, please show up on time and don’t come late. But otherwise, everyone has agreed that this social was a greater success than last years.

Haiti Fundraiser Week: Great Success!

Thank you YIS!

UNICEF Receipt for YIS Donation

Due to your generous donations, the contribution of some teachers in conducting reading sessions which were attended by students and great response to our bake sale and yard sale, STUCO  was able to raise 2020 SAR for the much-needed aid in Haiti. A total of 524 USD were donated through UNICEF website, and the money is going to wherever is most needed in Haiti.

Haiti Week (Feb. 27th –March 2nd): Helping the Haitians

At 16:53 local time, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the lives of the people of Haiti were completely changed. A catastrophic magnitude 7 earthquake hit the Haitian city of Léogâne; a city 25 km west of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Around 52 aftershocks of magnitude greater than 4.5 were recorded after the main earthquake. It is estimated that around 3 million Haitians were affected. The Haitian government reported that between 217,000 and 230,000 people were dead (the death toll is expected to rise), around 3,000 injured and estimated 1,000,000 were left homeless because of all the buildings destroyed.

And in order to help relieve the countless victims of the recent Haitian earthquake, the Y.I.S. Student Council would like to promote a week of school-wide fundraising. We hope to collect charity for the cause through running a bake sale, a yard sale, and story-telling sessions, as well as through receiving open donations.  All proceedings will go towards aid for uprooted Haitians through the UNICEF website .

-One thing, this is one long article but it is one IMPORTANT article, so please read all of it. And help us raise funds for the people of Haiti-

Activity #2-Bake Sale

The Student Council has planned a major Bake Sale where will be selling all sorts of baked good and other things. We will be selling numerous items from cakes and cookies, to Middle Eastern foods such as basbousas and sambosas (or samosas). STUCO will be holding the bake sale on Sunday February 28th, 2010 during MS/HS and elementary lunch hours.

Activity #3-Yard Sale

Come sell all your old items that are still in good shape but you just don’t want.  The Yard Sale will be held on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010. We are requesting the YIS community to bring any unwanted but quality, usable items such as home décor, games, stationeries, books, etc. We would kindly ask that people please bring them by Saturday, February 27th, 2010. The Council will assess the value and condition of the donated items and will determine the appropriate item. After we have set up the sale students and staff are invited to the gym purchase whatever they like during their lunchtimes and breaks.

Activity #4- Open Donations

Finally, we would also like to provide the chance for students, parents, and staff to contribute monetary aid through open donations. We will welcome any amount of money from Saturday, February 27th, 2010 to Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010.

All money raised in this week will be used to help the Haitians who are need of food, water, shelter, and other necessities of life.

November in Review- Eid week

This is another post that should have come up earlier but due to a few technical difficulties didn’t go as planned… but here it is. The Student Council decided to celebrate Eid by holding many diverse activities, at school. We started off by selling Eid grams for a week. During that same week we also did some henna for the girls. To add some color we did face painting, which many elementary students liked. To top off our week of celebrating Eid we had a traditional clothes day, similar to UN day. We raised a lot of money in our Eid activities and all of the money was donated to an orphanage in Yanbu. We would like thank all students for participating and bringing a smile to the needy.
