At 16:53 local time, on Tuesday, January 12, 2010, the lives of the people of Haiti were completely changed. A catastrophic magnitude 7 earthquake hit the Haitian city of Léogâne; a city 25 km west of Haiti’s capital Port-au-Prince. Around 52 aftershocks of magnitude greater than 4.5 were recorded after the main earthquake. It is estimated that around 3 million Haitians were affected. The Haitian government reported that between 217,000 and 230,000 people were dead (the death toll is expected to rise), around 3,000 injured and estimated 1,000,000 were left homeless because of all the buildings destroyed.
And in order to help relieve the countless victims of the recent Haitian earthquake, the Y.I.S. Student Council would like to promote a week of school-wide fundraising. We hope to collect charity for the cause through running a bake sale, a yard sale, and story-telling sessions, as well as through receiving open donations. All proceedings will go towards aid for uprooted Haitians through the UNICEF website .

Activity #1: Story Telling
For the lower elementary (JK- Grade 3) exclusively we will be holding an after-school reading session, where kids can listen to tales read by volunteer teachers and high school students. Every day two readings will happen simultaneously, one to students in junior kindergarten to grade one, and the other to those in grades two and three. Each reading will last from 3:00 P.M. to 3:45 P.M (except on Wednesday when the reading session concludes at 3.30). Each participant will be required to pay two riyals to attend a reading session. The subsequent table details the proposed readers, days, and locations for each session.

Activity #2-Bake Sale
The Student Council has planned a major Bake Sale where will be selling all sorts of baked good and other things. We will be selling numerous items from cakes and cookies, to Middle Eastern foods such as basbousas and sambosas (or samosas). STUCO will be holding the bake sale on Sunday February 28th, 2010 during MS/HS and elementary lunch hours.
Activity #3-Yard Sale
Come sell all your old items that are still in good shape but you just don’t want. The Yard Sale will be held on Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010. We are requesting the YIS community to bring any unwanted but quality, usable items such as home décor, games, stationeries, books, etc. We would kindly ask that people please bring them by Saturday, February 27th, 2010. The Council will assess the value and condition of the donated items and will determine the appropriate item. After we have set up the sale students and staff are invited to the gym purchase whatever they like during their lunchtimes and breaks.
Activity #4- Open Donations
Finally, we would also like to provide the chance for students, parents, and staff to contribute monetary aid through open donations. We will welcome any amount of money from Saturday, February 27th, 2010 to Wednesday, March 3rd, 2010.
All money raised in this week will be used to help the Haitians who are need of food, water, shelter, and other necessities of life.
